Sterling silver is made from a minimum of 92.5% pure silver. The remaining 7.5% is made from another alloy, normally copper, that is added to pure silver to make it a bit harder (pure silver is a soft metal) and therefore suitable for use in jewellery.
At Akandadirect, we specialises in high quality sterling silver jewellery that is produced by artisans in various locations throughout the world.
Our pearl and stone sterling silver jewellery is generally sourced from the artisans who live and work near Ubud in the Balinese hills. Most of these artisans are women and it is Akandadirect’s policy to pay for a fair price for the jewellery that we buy.
We also source some sterling silver jewellery from Thailand and India from traditional jewellery makers and many of the pieces in our heart jewellery come from these parts of the world.
Here are some hints for caring for your sterling silver jewellery:
All sterling silver jewellery will tarnish over time. To protect your sterling silver jewellery we recommend that you wash it in warm soapy water, rinse and dry it well and store it in a plastic bag. If you have a zip-lock bag to store your sterling silver jewellery in, then this is even better.
If your sterling silver jewellery contains pearls, we recommend that you use a soft silver polishing cloth to clean the sterling silver and that you wipe over the pearls with a soft damp cloth. Store your jewellery in a plastic bag and keep your pearls away from other pieces of jewellery.
If your sterling silver jewellery contains stones, we recommend that you use a soft silver polishing cloth to clean the sterling silver and that you wipe over the stones with a soft damp cloth. Store your jewellery in a plastic bag.
Never immerse your sterling silver jewellery in chlorine (take it off before you go swimming) and avoid contact with cleaning products, sunscreen, hairspray and perfume.
If your sterling silver jewellery contains pearls and/or stones, avoid immersing the jewellery in water as this may cause the pearls and/or stones to become loose.
Enjoy wearing your sterling silver jewellery.
